Japan: Travel Plan in Yakushima

 

Yakushima is a subtropical island located in Kyushu and part of Kagoshima. It is covered by an extensive cedar forest. There are trees that are more than 1000 years old.  They are called Yakusugi. There is a tree that is more than 7000 years old. Yakushima is certified as UNESCO World Heritage.



They are views of Yakushima's nature.



 〜 5 fun things to do in Yakushima 〜


1. See Yakusugi

You can see Yaku cedars in Yakushima. They are over 1,000 years old. There is a big river running through the road. You can enjoy fantastic atmosphere where the beauty of the forest. 


2. See Shiratani Unsui-kyo Gorge


According to Japan Monthly Web Magazine, Shiratani Unsui-kyo Gorge with the fantastical view resembling a movie scene. It is said that the forest in the anime film “Princess Mononoke” by Hayao Miyazaki, one of the top directors in Japan, was inspired from this place. The altitude is 600m at the entrance and about 900m in the forest of Princess Mononoke.



3. Animals Watching

There are a lot of deer, monkeys and bird. Deer in Yakushima are called Yaku Shika. Yaku Shika are smaller than the mainland species. Monkeys in Yaku Shima is called Yakushima macaque. The Yakushima macaque is smaller and has a thicker grey coat with darker hands and feet. About 150 bird species are found on the island.


4. Swim in the sea

The sea around Yakushima is very clean. You can enjoy to swim. You will see a lot of fish in the sea.



5. Hiking mountain

According to YES! Yakushima Web Site, Yakushima has some fantastic hikes that cater to all abilities.  From half day hikes to 3 or 4 day treks.  From dep forest treks to mountain hikes which take you to the vast expanses of open highland above the tree-line.
